Maguinha, My Singing Sister

We were born and grew up in the interior of Goias. A river - with its curves, current, dark waters and a black bridge - cut through our world. That river was the Piracanjuba. Beyond the river, the dusty road lead to the town, and then to the immense universe that was our backyard.
It was there, amidst mango and guava trees with their cicadas and small birds - together with our daddy's guitar and our momma's beautiful, perfectly pitched voice - that Maguinha learned how to sing. I, who only liked to play with crickets, lizards, mud and the holes on the adobe walls that enclosed our backyard, was happy to just scribble on the soil with a piece of dry wood while I listened to her singing.
While we grew up, our house was a reason for serenades. Our front porch became a garden filled with stolen roses, thrown in by the musicians, their petals covering the ground.
Life went on giving birth to all of Maguinha's dreams, dreams of people, dreams of animals, until dreams came out of her voice. The passing years transformed her singing. She came to know the colors, the flavors, the cities, and the seasons - until autumn came.
Between us exists a tie of invisible lines. And she has always had the map of my soul on the palm of her hand.
There isn't what to write about Maguinha. Nor what to say, nor what to think - because what is most beautiful can't be said in words. These words haven't yet been invented. Here I stay, in the beauty of the dis-invention. Hoping to be like children who say everything, while seeming to be saying nothing at all.

Nascemos e crescemos no interior de Goiás. Um rio - com suas curvas, correnteza, águas turvas e ponte preta - cortava nosso mundo. Esse rio era o Piracanjuba. Depois do rio, a estrada empoeirada levava até a cidade e depois ao imenso universo que era o nosso quintal.
Foi lá, entre mangueiras e goiabeiras, com as cigarras e os passarinhos - juntamente com o violão de papai e a voz bonita e afinada de mamãe - que Maguinha aprendeu a cantar. Eu, que só gostava de brincar com grilos, lagartos, barro e com os buracos no muro de adobe, me contentava em rabiscar a terra com pau seco enquanto escutava os seus gorjeios.
Enquanto crescíamos, nossa casa era razão de serenata. Nosso alpendre, um jardim repleto de rosas roubadas e atiradas pelos seresteiros, com suas petalas salpicando o chão.
A vida foi parindo todos os sonhos da Maguinha, sonhos de gente, sonhos de bichos, até que os sonhos sairam na sua voz. Os anos transformaram seus gorjeios. Sua voz conheceu as cores, os sabores, o mato, as cidades, e as estações - até chegar no outono.
Entre nós existe um laço de linhas invisíveis. E ela sempre teve o mapa de minha alma na palma de sua mão.
Não há o que escrever sobre Maguinha. Nem o que dizer, nem o que pensar. Porque para o mais bonito, não existem palavras. Elas ainda não foram inventadas. Fico por aqui, na beleza do desinvento. Esperando ser como as criancas que falam sobre o tudo, parecendo que estão falando sobre o nada.

Magda Machado, a.k.a. Maguinha
The singer and poet left Goiás, in Brazil, in 1970, during the military dictatorship that dismantled her family. She went from the backlands of Goiás, with its Savannah farms, and forests, to New York City. After graduating from C.W. Post College, in Languages and Education, she sang at the Feitiço, in Greenwich Village, with guitarist Beso. There, Maguinha met percussionist Dom Um Romao, of Weather Report, and joined his band. Later on she worked with Sam Elyachar and Alph Edwards and, eventually, with Romero Lubambo and Nilson Matta, who had just arrived from Brazil.
In 1986, Maguinha went from New York to Italy and spent the next decade creating and working in-between the two countries. She came to Miami in 1997 from Mill Valley, California, where she worked with internationally acclaimed author and photojournalist Doug Menuez. Of Miami, she says: "I was puzzled to see how, in spite of the many cultures thriving here, every group stuck to its own kind. Miami had everything to be a vibrant cultural center where all could celebrate and appreciate their differences, yet each group was out of touch with the other. It was like having this fantastic recipe for a cake, and all the ingredients, only there wasn’t anyone baking it. So I decided that whatever I’d do in this town, I would put effort into baking the cake.”
She went on to sing at Tap Tap, in South Beach, with legendary Haitian singer and songwriter Manno Charlemagne, and his Tap Tap Band. She can also be heard in the downtown Miami area, in places like the Ethiopian Sheba or the Thai/Italian Soya e Pomodoro. An ambassador for her own culture, she sings with her beloved “Brazilian Voices”, a woman's choir founded by Beatriz Malnic and Loren Dae. That participation allows her to “bask in the warmth of communal singing, while having a sense of belonging to the Brazilian community in South Florida."
She is married to Norwegian clarinetist and geologist Knut Garshol, and has two children, Janaina and Max Panconesi, from a previous marriage.

Magda Machado, mais conhecida como Maguinha
Cantora, poetisa, compositora, Maguinha veio para os Estados Unidos em 1970 durante a ditadura que durou, no Brasil, de 1964 a 1980. Por força de trágicos eventos que desmantelaram sua familia, Maguinha fugiu de sua terra natal Goiás, e foi parar em Nova York. Formou-se em Pedagogia e Línguas pelo C.W. Post College em Old Brookville, e foi cantar no Feitiço do Village, em Greenwich Village. Ali se entrosou com a roda de músicos brasileiros que viviam em Nova York nas décadas de 70 e 80, e passou a cantar com o percussionista brasileiro Dom Um Romão, conhecido pelo seu trabalho com Sergio Mendes e com o Weather Report, e finalmente, com Romero Lubambo e Nilson Matta, ambos recém-chegados do Brasil.
Em 1986, Maguinha foi de New York para a Itália, dividindo tempo e trabalho entre os dois países por quase uma década. Mudou-se para Miami em 1997, vinda da Califórnia, onde cantou na área de San Francisco e Marin County. Ao chegar em Miami, ficou intrigada ao ver como, apesar de que aqui viviam tantos grupos de culturas diferentes, "cada pessoa só agia dentro do seu próprio grupo. Miami tinha tudo para ser um centro cultural vibrante com grande intercâmbio artístico. Era como ter uma grande e bela receita de um bolo fantástico, e todos os ingredientes, mas ninguém queria fazer o bolo". Decidiu, então, arregaçar as mangas e ser a confeiteira.
Com este espírito, foi cantar no Tap Tap, em South Beach, com o grande compositor e cantor haitiano Manno Charlemagne e sua Tap Tap Band, com quem gravou um disco. Representou o Brasil no International Creole Fest de 2007 em Fort Lauderdale, onde fez show de comemoração à herança cultural africana no Brasil. Através da música e da educação, dedica-se a aproximar povos de etnias diversas e a remover barreiras e preconceitos entre as pessoas. Embaixatriz da cultura brasileira, participa do seu amado "Brazilian Voices", um coral feminino dirigido por Beatriz Malnic e Loren Dae, envolvido com projetos comunitários sociais e educativos. Tal participação lhe permite "gozar do calor do canto comunitário", enquanto membro atuante da comunidade brasileira do sul da Flórida.
É casada com o clarinetista e geólogo norueguês Knut Gashol, e tem dois filhos - Janaina e Max Panconesi, de um casamento anterior.
